Josh Fields – Miles and Mountains Coaching

Adaptive • Long-Term • Sustainable

Josh Fields is the coach and founder of Miles and Mountains Coaching. He first dipped a toe into running in 2013 — and was all-in within months, running nearly a hundred races in his first few years and pacing elite runners at Leadville and Badwater. Coaching followed soon after, which quickly grew into a full-time career.

His coaching philosophy grew out of those years — from seeing how often runners get handed static plans that don’t fit their life or help them develop as athletes over the years it actually takes.

Based in New Hampshire, Josh offers empathetic, human-centered coaching with a fully-customized, adaptive and long-term approach to road, trail and ultra runners around the world.

Coaching Philosophy

A training plan is a static document. Coaching is an adaptive process. Real long-term development — Boston qualifying, 100-milers, mountain breakthroughs — doesn’t happen in a single 16-week build. It happens across years of work, woven through real life. Josh coaches the whole athlete: training, fueling, recovery, mindset, and race execution, with unlimited communication and training built week to week in real time.

Coaching Background

Josh has coached full-time since 2020, working with road, trail, and ultra athletes from first-time finishers to national-level competitors. Nearly 40% of his current athletes have been with him for 3+ years — a reflection of the long-term, relationship-based approach at the core of his coaching. He was coached by David Roche of SWAP for six years, and credits David with much of the philosophy that shapes his coaching today.
